Each year, the American educational platform Coursera compiles a report on key skills and trends in education — the Global Skills Report.
This year, the document has undergone significant changes - it now includes data on the AI Maturity Index. This indicator makes it possible to assess how prepared 109 countries around the world are for the implementation and active use of artificial intelligence at the national level.
Singapore ranked first in the index. It consistently ranks among the global leaders in AI readiness, ecosystem development, and investments in generative chatbots. In addition to Singapore, the top five countries in the AI Maturity Index include Denmark, Switzerland, the United States, and Finland. Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Australia also demonstrated strong performance in AI readiness.
The AI Maturity Index data is based on feedback from users of the educational platform, reports from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank. The IMF's AI Preparedness Index was also taken into account. This enabled Coursera analysts to assess not only how interested the population of a particular country is in learning AI skills, but also how much these skills and competencies are in demand in the country's economy.
In addition to the AI Maturity Index, Coursera's report also features a ranking of countries by the level of AI skills development. The approach to data collection has also changed - information about the educational platform's students now accounts for only 25% of the overall score, while the remaining 75% is formed by external indicators, such as capital index and GDP per capita, labor force participation rate, and others. Switzerland emerged as the leader among the 109 countries, just as it did last year. The Netherlands and Sweden also made it into the top three.
Coursera also stated that demand for AI skills courses is growing rapidly. For example, the number of registrations for GenAI courses increased by 195% compared to last year, exceeding 8 million. Back in 2023, one person signed up for AI courses every minute, while in 2025 - 12 people per minute. As a result, training in GenAI tools has become the most sought-after offering on Coursera.
It is known that the number of learners studying GenAI has more than doubled in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as in the Middle East and Africa. Meanwhile, in Latin American countries, this figure has increased by 425%. At the same time, demand is also growing for courses in critical thinking and cybersecurity (by 28% and 11%, respectively).
