Learning in your smartphone: education in Ukraine today

In 2020, the education industry is challenged with many serious changes brought by the coronavirus situation. Advanced technologies helped a lot in adapting the educational process to changes.

Now Ukrainian students can acquire knowledge and submit homework assignments online. Many students watch lectures on YouTube, getting feedback from their teachers via email or Skype. This was accomplished thanks to Finnish colleagues, whose developments are the basis for the concept of the "New Ukrainian School", an adapted educational system, which is more flexible.

Since the standard educational system couldn't independently adjust to the new learning conditions, it needed outside help. The All-Ukrainian School Online came to the rescue. In just three weeks, volunteers, together with teachers, were able to conduct 545 lessons and gather over 12 million students online.

As practice has shown, the requirements and the number of assignments imposed by the Ministry of Education were not adapted well enough for the online format. Many parents were upset by the large volume of assignments their children had to do during their homeschooling, which led to poor academic performance.

During the pandemic in Ukraine, Coursera, Prometheus, EdEra have become the most popular online platforms for educational courses. They offer individual lessons and courses in various areas: from psychology and management to courses on entrepreneurship and English. Such platforms were used not just by adults, but by children as well, who got the opportunity to catch up with the school curriculum from home.
