Metaschool is rapidly gaining popularity in Japan

| News

Earlier this year, the world's first school, which exists solely in the metaverse, opened in the country.

Students attend classes as their favourite anime avatars. Over the past few months, this Japanese project has gained international recognition.

Metaschool is modelled after the traditional Yushi International High School. The Japanese Ministry of Education approved the concept of a school existing solely in virtual reality. Students utilise various VR technologies as part of their education, with all necessary equipment provided for free by Aominext, the metaverse developer. This setup allows students to attend school from anywhere in the country or even the world.

The metaschool curriculum covers all subjects in a traditional high school program, particularly programming and digital content creation. To foster communities of interest and expand students' social connections, the metaverse hosts various festivals, master classes, eSports competitions, and other events. Upon graduation, students will receive official completion certificates.

A similar project was proposed in Tokyo in 2021, where a metaverse was developed for schoolchildren unable to attend traditional schools regularly. Similarly, the first entirely virtual school was opened in the United States a few years ago.

UNESCO insists on a global ban on smartphones in schools

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) highlights that school performance declines, concentration issues, and increased absent-mindedness are largely linked to widespread digitalisation and the use of gadgets in education.
